New Puppy - Helpful Training Tips #2

So you're ready to take your puppy out into the world, however the little guy or girl has never walked on a leash before. So here are some tips and ideas to make the walking experience better and easier for both of you.

First let's discuss the types of equipment for walking. There are long or short leashes, various collars snap, buckle, & choke types (I personally am against choke collars). Also there are harnesses and leads.

My humble and professional opinion is to start with a short leash and a face/head lead or lead type harness. This allows the puppy to learn to keep pace with you and not tug or pull you. Another trick is to use "bait" to get your puppy to follow you  near your side. This is achieved by using treats or even a wooden spoon or spatula with peanut butter on it.

After the puppy has learned to leash walk comfortably without pulling or trying to run up to other people or animals. You can then switch to a normal harness, collar and longer leash. I prefer using a harness at all times rather than a collar. It gives more control and doesn't squeeze on your puppies windpipe.

Remember to always be clear and consistent when training your puppy to walk beside you, never yell or smack your puppy for pulling or tugging. Bait the puppy back into position or have them sit until you resume walking. Be confident when walking your pup to show that you are in charge and a good leader for them to follow.
